My girlfriend lost her cellphone yesterday.  An HTC Incredible.. great phone.  But she lost it, and after overturning my apartment twice, and checking the local coffee shop twice.. she gave up and ordered a replacement.  She's lost her phone, her contacts, her photos, and she's out even more money because she has to replace it.  The only thing that is more disappointing is that we might have been able to find the phone if she had installed and enabled a GPS tracking app to find her lost phone.

Yes, theres an APP FOR THAT!, as they say.  And I was really dissapointed in myself for not making her install one of these helpful recovery apps sooner.  I was also ashamed when I realized that I hadn't enabled the same feature on my iphone 4.  So first thing I did this morning was enable the free lost phone service from Apple's MobileMe application.  Its completely free, even if your not a mobileme subscriber.  Here's a link to an article describing how to enable the service on your iphone.

And theres similar applications available on android.  Just do a quick search and see what you find.  The most important thing is that you INSTALL IT NOW, BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.  Otherwise you could be like my girlfriend, who wished she'd known about the apps, and installed them before it was too late.  Luckily her experience taught me a lesson, and I'm now better prepared.  Hopefully you are too.
